Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Strikes Ukraine; Kyiv Declares Day of Mourning

Following a massive overnight air assault involving over 400 weapons, Kyiv has declared a day of mourning as rescuers search for survivors trapped under the rubble of residential buildings.

A Massive Aerial Assault

Russia launched a coordinated attack on Ukraine between Sunday and Monday, utilizing a mix of 68 missiles and 351 drones. Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 363 of these targets, though impacts were reported in 34 locations across the country.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the strikes on the capital resulted in at least twelve deaths and over 50 injuries. The city will observe a day of mourning on Tuesday, with flags lowered to half-mast on all municipal buildings.

Emergency Rescue Operations

The bombardment caused widespread damage to civilian infrastructure, including several residential blocks where residents were sleeping at the time of the impact. Emergency crews are currently working to locate and rescue individuals trapped beneath the debris.

Precautionary Measures in Poland

The Polish Operational Command of the Armed Forces mobilized fighter jets and ground-based air defense systems as a preventative measure due to the intensity of the Russian long-range aviation activity. Support was provided by French and Dutch forces.

The military confirmed that the operations were purely defensive and concluded without any violation of Polish airspace. The forces involved remained at high alert throughout the duration of the aerial strikes.

Pre-emptive Warnings

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had warned on Sunday that Russia was preparing a large-scale attack following U.S. Independence Day and ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara. He renewed his urgent call for Western partners to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, particularly through additional Patriot missile systems.
