MZA Responds to Speculation Following Line 186 Bus Accident

Warsaw’s Municipal Bus Company (MZA) has issued an official statement regarding the July 5th accident involving a Solaris Urbino 18 bus, while urging caution against unverified technical theories.

Official Stance on the Investigation

MZA has announced it is withholding further comment on the causes of the serious accident involving bus number 7717, which occurred on July 5 at the Zesłańców Syberyjskich roundabout. The company is waiting for authorized access to the vehicle to conduct a joint inspection with the manufacturer.

The bus has been secured by police and prosecutors, who are currently the only entities responsible for investigating the incident. The company maintains that thorough verification by specialists is necessary before any conclusions can be drawn.

Refuting Technical Speculation

The company explicitly rejected claims regarding a potential failure of the acceleration potentiometer. According to MZA, no such failures have been recorded in this bus series, and a technical malfunction of this component would theoretically immobilize the vehicle rather than cause it to accelerate.

MZA also denied public speculation regarding the possibility of remote control over the vehicle, confirming with the manufacturer that such a technical capability does not exist.

Incident Overview and Ongoing Inquiry

The incident began after the bus departed from the Szczęśliwicka terminus. It traveled approximately 1,700 meters, striking over a dozen vehicles, a tram, and infrastructure before coming to a stop against the wall of an underpass at the Zesłańców Syberyjskich roundabout.

While the driver initially claimed a brake system failure, authorities and experts are still reviewing technical documentation and physical evidence. Five people, including one child, were reported injured during the event, which triggered a massive emergency response from police, fire, and medical services.
