Explosions Rock Damascus During Macron Visit

A series of blasts occurred on Tuesday near the hotel hosting French President Emmanuel Macron in Damascus, prompting security forces to cordon off the area surrounding the Ministry of Tourism.

Explosions in the Capital

The explosions took place on Tuesday, July 7. A security source confirmed to Reuters that the blasts occurred near the hotel where President Macron was staying. Witnesses reported hearing the detonations and seeing smoke rising over the city.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported that two explosions were heard specifically near the Ministry of Tourism. Authorities subsequently blocked off roads in the vicinity of the incident.

Macron’s Visit to Syria

President Macron arrived in Syria on Monday, marking the first visit by a European Union leader since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in 2024. The visit focuses on the country’s reconstruction, with the President accompanied by business leaders, including executives from TotalEnergies and CMA CGM.

In a post on X, Macron stated he arrived to demonstrate France’s commitment to the Syrian people, expressing a desire for a sovereign, united Syria that lives in peace with its neighbors.

Diplomatic Relations and Political Dialogue

Syrian President Ahmad as-Shara hailed the visit as a milestone in bilateral relations, reflecting France’s long-standing support. He noted that Macron has maintained contact with Syrian leadership since the fall of Assad.

In a television interview with BFM TV, as-Shara added that France has played a constructive role in efforts to lift sanctions against Syria. The two leaders previously met in Paris last year.
