Bottle Deposit Revolution: Recycling Kiosks Coming to Residential Neighborhoods

A new initiative in Warsaw will see automated deposit machines installed directly in housing estates, allowing residents to return plastic bottles and cans near their homes instead of at retail stores.

Ending the Trip to the Store

The days of carrying bags filled with empty bottles to the supermarket are coming to an end. The Warsaw Housing Cooperative (WSM) and the operator Kaucja.pl are installing the first public deposit machines directly within residential complexes.

This initiative aims to streamline the deposit-refund system, making it faster and more convenient for residents to return packaging without needing to visit a shop. The first units are currently being deployed in the Młociny district.

Efficiency and Expansion Plans

The system is integrated with the Kaucja.pl platform to ensure transparent and efficient financial settlements. According to Dariusz Dworzecki of Kaucja.pl, placing machines near homes is expected to significantly increase participation rates among residents.

The expansion is not limited to Warsaw. By the end of 2026, the company plans to install over 500 devices across housing estates in Gdańsk, Poznań, Łódź, and the Silesia region. In Warsaw alone, 1,200 machines are planned to become available to the public.

User-Friendly Incentives

To further encourage use, the machines will provide refunds directly to a user’s card instead of issuing traditional receipts. Michał Wróblewski, CEO of Recyclo, emphasized that the goal is to create a seamless system that requires zero extra effort from residents.

Przemysław Prus, president of the WSM, noted that the cooperative sees this as a vital step toward creating more modern, environmentally friendly housing estates, leading them to provide the necessary space for the installations.
