Polish Prosecutor Confirms Third-Party Involvement in Death of Activist in Ecuador

Following the receipt of a preliminary autopsy report from Ecuador, Polish investigators have officially confirmed that the death of activist Monika Silva-Koniuszek was likely the result of third-party actions.

Preliminary Autopsy Findings

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 7, the Olsztyn District Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that investigators have received initial autopsy results for Monika Silva-Koniuszek via Polish diplomatic channels in Peru. The findings contradict the initial suicide theory previously asserted by Ecuadorian authorities.

Ongoing Legal Cooperation

Polish investigators are currently awaiting a full set of case files and the final autopsy report from Ecuador, following a formal request for international legal assistance. Prosecutors in the Santa Elena province have assured their Polish counterparts that the case is proceeding according to local regulations.

Circumstances of the Death

Monika Silva-Koniuszek, an anti-corruption activist, had lived in Montanita, Ecuador, for years. She had recently reported threats from drug cartels due to her work exposing illegal public land sales. Before her death, she publicly stated she feared for her life.

Contradicting Suicide Claims

The victim’s body was discovered in her hostel on June 8. While the Ecuadorian Minister of the Interior initially claimed she left a suicide note, the individual identified as her partner has since denied these claims, stating that the final message he received from her was a simple morning greeting.
