78 Landmarks Renamed in Google Maps Cyber-Vandalism

Users reported offensive and provocative labels appearing on prominent Warsaw landmarks in Google Maps on July 5, prompting CERT Polska to log 78 incidents as Google works to scrub the data.

Escalation of Map Vandalism

The scale of the incident proved larger than initial social media screenshots indicated, affecting state institutions, memorial sites, museums, parks, shopping centers, and sports venues. It remains unclear whether the edits stem from a single source or multiple actors.

CERT Polska has not confirmed a formal breach or cyberattack, emphasizing that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions regarding the technical nature of the incident.

Nature of the Offensive Modifications

The mass changes, which began appearing on Sunday, July 5, replaced official names with political slurs, vulgarities, and offensive references to Nazism and the Third Reich. Targets included the Presidential Palace, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Warsaw Rising Museum.

While some entries have been corrected, officials noted that similar pranks have occurred in the past, complicating efforts to determine if this was a coordinated attack.

Google’s Remediation Efforts

Google confirmed that its teams are actively removing unauthorized names and enforcing content policies by blocking the accounts responsible for the edits. The restoration process is ongoing, meaning some users may continue to see incorrect labels temporarily.

Although Google’s system allows users to suggest edits subject to verification, the company has yet to provide a technical explanation for how so many blatantly incorrect entries were published simultaneously.

CERT Polska Clarifies Situation

Despite reports labeling the incident a “hack,” there is no official confirmation that Google’s core systems were breached. CERT Polska is monitoring the situation and advises that users report erroneous entries directly to the platform’s moderation team.

At this stage, investigators have confirmed only three facts: the identities of the perpetrators remain unknown, the mechanism of the mass changes is unidentified, and the vandalism specifically targeted significant Polish historical and state landmarks.
