Abandoned Suitcase Prompts Military Police Security Operation at Ministry of National Defense

On Saturday, July 18, military police conducted a bomb disposal operation after an unattended suitcase was found on the steps of the Ministry of National Defense in Warsaw.

Unattended Baggage at the Ministry

On Saturday, July 18, at Nowowiejska Street near the intersection with Aleja Niepodległości in Śródmieście, a security operation was conducted in front of the Ministry of National Defense building. The intervention was triggered by unattended baggage left on the steps leading to the building. Due to the location and significance of the facility for state security, the report was treated with the utmost caution.

Security Lockdown and Bomb Disposal

The area was secured by Military Police officers along with ZTM and Warsaw Tram traffic control personnel. During the operation, vehicular and tram traffic was blocked. Military pyrotechnicians were dispatched to the scene to inspect the suspicious item. The pyrotechnic reconnaissance yielded a negative result, as no items posing a direct threat to people nearby were found inside the abandoned suitcase.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Due to the nature of the incident, further proceedings were initiated to identify the person who left the baggage and to clarify their motives. Proceedings were launched under Article 224a paragraph 1 of the Penal Code. The gathered documentation was forwarded to the Warsaw-Ursynów District Prosecutor’s Office, specifically to the department dealing with military cases. Currently, no one has been detained in connection with the incident.

Official Statement and Legal Basis

Lt. Col. Tomasz Wiktorowicz, Press Spokesperson for the Mazovian Branch of the Military Police, informed our editorial office that an unknown origin baggage was discovered on Saturday, July 18, before the Ministry of National Defense building. Military Police secured the area and conducted pyrotechnic reconnaissance, which revealed no hazardous materials. Proceedings were initiated under Article 224a § 1 of the Penal Code, with no arrests made thus far, and all materials transferred to the Warsaw-Ursynów District Prosecutor’s Office for military affairs.

Article 224a paragraph 1 states that anyone who, knowing that a threat does not exist, reports an event that threatens the life or health of many people or property of significant size, or creates a situation intended to induce the belief that such a threat exists, thereby triggering the action of a public utility institution or a protection authority of security, public order, or health aimed at averting the threat, is subject to imprisonment from 6 months to 8 years.
