Investigation into Działdowo Incident
The Olsztyn Regional Police Headquarters confirmed that an accidental discharge occurred Thursday morning at the Działdowo District Police Station. A female officer was drawing her service weapon when the incident took place.
The District Police Commander in Działdowo has initiated investigative procedures. Additionally, inspectors from the Oversight Department of the Olsztyn Regional Police are currently reviewing the circumstances of the event, and the public prosecutor has been notified.
Pattern of Service Weapon Mishaps
This is not an isolated incident within the force. In December, a firearm discharged at a police station in Pionkach, Masovian Voivodeship, following an interrogation conducted by two officers.
Reports indicate that the weapon fired while officers were preparing a detainee for transport to the prosecutor’s office. Fortunately, no one was injured during this event, which is now the subject of a prosecutorial investigation.
The Jarosław Szymczyk Grenade Launcher Case
The most prominent incident occurred on December 14, 2022, at the National Police Headquarters, involving then-commander General Jarosław Szymczyk. The Interior Ministry stated that a “gift” received during a visit to Ukraine—an RGW-90 anti-tank weapon—detonated inside the building.
Szymczyk claimed he believed the weapons were inert and intended to move them when the explosion occurred. The blast left both the commander and a civilian employee with minor injuries and caused structural damage to the ceiling and floor.
In January of last year, the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office indicted Szymczyk, charging him with unintentionally creating a danger to the lives and health of many people. Prosecutors allege the weapon was fully functional and that the former commander had disengaged the safety mechanism shortly before the blast occurred.
