Mayor Wegner Confirms Identity of Victim
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner announced on Monday that the woman who died Saturday as a result of the attack on participants of the Equality Parade in Berlin was a Polish citizen. According to his statements, the Polish woman was staying in the German capital with her daughter.
Wegner reported that he expressed his condolences to the head of the Polish embassy in Germany, Jan Tombiński. “I was very moved by what happened on Saturday, and my thoughts are with you, and above all with the daughter and family of the murdered woman,” Wegner said, as quoted by dpa.
Berlin to Draw Consequences from Terrorist Attack
“This terrorist attack was motivated by hatred. We need more cooperation, more solidarity, less hatred, and fewer wars in the world,” the Mayor of Berlin said.
Wegner announced that the victim was a Polish woman during the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the Warsaw Uprising at the Berlin Red Town Hall.
Consular Support and Commemoration in Berlin
According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wewiór, the Polish consul in Berlin remains in contact with the German authorities and will provide the family with necessary consular support.
On Tuesday at 3:00 PM, a commemoration ceremony for the deceased woman is scheduled to take place in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
Details of the Attack and Police Operation
Late Saturday evening, the perpetrator of the attack drove a van into a crowd of people in an alley in the Berlin Tiergarten park, near where the Equality Parade was taking place. A woman was killed, and 29 people were injured. German police launched a manhunt.
The suspect was shot dead on Sunday during a police operation in allotment gardens in the Berlin district of Spandau. Authorities identified the perpetrator as 21-year-old Abdul B., an Islamic State sympathizer.
