Berlin Rejects Polish Proposal for Ukraine Peace Talks Seat

Germany has dismissed Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski’s demand for Poland to hold a seat at potential Ukraine peace negotiations, citing that conditions for such talks currently do not exist.

Germany Denies Imminence of Peace Negotiations

A German government spokesperson stated that this is not the appropriate moment to discuss negotiation formats or participation. The official emphasized that no negotiations are currently underway and Russia has shown no willingness to engage in dialogue.

Berlin further clarified that it does not hold a leading position in determining who represents parties at the negotiating table.

Sikorski Challenges the Franco-German Axis

The German response follows an interview given by Radosław Sikorski to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, in which he asserted that Poland demands a place at the negotiating table regarding Ukraine.

Sikorski argued that the Franco-German engine is insufficient to power the current European Union, noting that 150 million people living near the front lines are more directly threatened by Russian aggression than Germany. He highlighted that Poland facilitates 90 percent of weapon deliveries to Ukraine and therefore bears significant risk.

Proposed Representation for EU Negotiations

Sikorski suggested that the European Union should be represented in potential negotiations either by its institutions, such as the President of the European Council, or by a coalition of willing member states.

Upcoming E5 Meeting in Berlin

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Poland to a meeting in Berlin next week. The agenda includes reviewing the results of the G7 and European Council summits, as well as preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.
