Brief Respite from Heat Ends Monday as Severe Storms and High Temperatures Return to Poland

Poland experiences a temporary drop in temperatures before a severe heatwave returns on Monday, accompanied by IMGW weather warnings, torrential downpours, and violent storms across the country.

Weather Situation and IMGW Warnings

Poland is currently under the influence of a slowly weakening high-pressure system whose center is moving over Belarus. Increasingly warm polar maritime air is flowing in from the west and southwest. Due to rising temperatures, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued second-degree heat warnings for the Lubusz Voivodeship, the southern part of West Pomerania, and northern Lower Silesia. These alerts will be in effect from Sunday at 1:00 PM until Monday at 6:00 PM.

Sunday Warmth and Sunshine

Sunday will feature cloudless skies or small cloud cover. Maximum temperatures will range from 22 degrees Celsius in the Hel region and 23 degrees in the Suwałki region, through around 26 to 27 degrees in the center and in Warsaw, up to 31 degrees in Lower Silesia and the Lubusz Land. The wind will be weak and periodically moderate.

Nighttime Weather Changes

On the night from Sunday to Monday, the weather will remain clear in the east and south, while cloud cover in the west and northwest will gradually increase, bringing local light, intermittent rainfall. At night, thermometers will indicate from 8 degrees in the Carpathian basins, through 11 to 14 degrees in the east, to 18 and 19 degrees in the western borders and on the coast.

Monday Storms and Heavy Rains

IMGW synoptic Michał Kowalczuk told PAP that while the weekend brings a temporary weather respite, storms are forecasted for the west and central Poland on Monday. In these regions, rainfall may be combined with hail. IMGW synoptic Michał Kowalczuk warns in an interview with PAP that storms may be accompanied by torrential rains with total precipitation from 20 to 30 millimeters and strong wind gusts reaching 80 to 90 kilometers per hour.

Temperatures at the Start of the Week

The first day of the new week will also be very hot in most of the country, with thermometers showing from 30 to 33 degrees Celsius, including 32 degrees in the capital. Slightly cooler conditions will occur in the north and Podhale, where 25 to 28 degrees will be recorded, and even colder on the east coast with temperatures around 22 degrees. The east and south of the country will remain clear and dry.

Upcoming Cooling Trend

Forecasters announce that after this short episode of heat, a gradual cooling will follow in the coming days. According to the IMGW forecast for Warsaw in the coming days, Tuesday will see a maximum of 22 degrees with partial cloudiness. Southern Poland will be warmer with up to 26 degrees in the Subcarpathian region, while Pomerania and the Suwałki region will be the coolest at up to 18 degrees, where rain may also occur. Wednesday is forecasted to range from 19 degrees in Western Pomerania to 24 in the south, with rain clouds returning over the northern part of Poland.

Return of the Heatwave

According to the latest forecasts from the American GFS model, hot air could once again cover almost the entire country starting August 16. On the very first day of the new heatwave, temperatures in southern Poland could approach 39 degrees Celsius, particularly in the Opole and Subcarpathian regions.
