Brutal Attack on Ukrainians in Wrocław Sparks Embassy and Mayoral Outrage

A 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man from Ukraine were brutally assaulted in Wrocław on Sunday following a store queue dispute, drawing sharp condemnation from the Ukrainian embassy and the city’s mayor.

The Assault on Okulickiego Street

The incident took place on Sunday, July 26, on Okulickiego Street in Wrocław. Junior Inspector Aleksandra Freus, spokesperson for the Wrocław police, stated that the victims are a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man from Ukraine. She noted that the aggression began with a dispute in a store queue before the men later attacked the Ukrainian citizen on the street, adding that a national-prejudice motive is emerging in the case.

A video of the attack was published on social media by the victim’s mother, who wrote on Facebook that her daughter was severely beaten, suffered serious neck injuries, and was receiving stitches, while both she and her boyfriend were suspected of suffering concussions. The 20-year-old’s brother described that his sister had previously confronted men in the store who cut ahead of her and her partner in line, and those same men allegedly hurled insults at them and carried out the subsequent beating.

Ukrainian Embassy Reaction

The ambassador of Ukraine to Poland addressed the beating of the Ukrainian couple, with Vasyl Bodnar announcing on social media that the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry instructed the Consulate General of Ukraine in Wrocław to take necessary and urgent action. The diplomat stated they note with regret that acts of violence and aggression against Ukrainian citizens have recently been on the rise in Poland.

He emphasized that every case of assault against people of Ukrainian origin requires a thorough explanation and proper legal assessment from the Polish police and the Ministry of Interior and Administration. The diplomat concluded by stating that all manifestations of violence, xenophobia, and hatred are unacceptable and have no place in a democratic society.

Wrocław Mayor’s Appeal

Wrocław Mayor Jacek Sutryk released a statement expressing deep concern and outrage over the brutal attacks in Wrocław that were motivated by national prejudice. He stated clearly that there is and will be no tolerance in the city for violence motivated by hatred, xenophobia, or national prejudice, and that everyone has the right to feel safe in Wrocław regardless of language, origin, or beliefs.

Sutryk emphasized that every ethnically motivated attack is an assault on the entire community, labeling Sunday’s incident as an alarming signal that requires a firm response. He appealed to residents for solidarity and responsibility, urging them not to be indifferent, to report incidents to services, and to document them safely. He also warned politicians and public figures that words matter, as public narratives labeling people as foreign or inferior can lead to real-world violence.

The Ukrainian embassy responded to the mayor’s statement, noting that Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar expressed gratitude to Wrocław Mayor Jacek Sutryk for his firm reaction, solidarity with the victims, and clear opposition to violence, xenophobia, and hatred.
