Bundeswehr Tests “Grille” Drones for Battlefield Casualty Evacuation

The German Armed Forces have initiated testing of the “Grille” drone system, a new unmanned aerial platform designed to evacuate wounded soldiers from combat zones with a 50-kilometer flight range.

The Grille Evacuation System

The German military announced on Thursday that it is testing specialized drones capable of transporting wounded personnel from active combat zones. These unmanned aerial vehicles have a flight range of approximately 50 kilometers and can carry patients weighing up to 135 kilograms.

In April, the Bundeswehr reached a formal agreement with Avilius, a Bavarian drone manufacturer. The project includes comprehensive training programs to ensure soldiers are proficient in operating these medical evacuation systems.

Operational Specifications and Testing

The Grille drones reach speeds of approximately 90 kilometers per hour. According to a joint statement from the manufacturer and the Bundeswehr, the primary objective is to refine the system to meet specific military requirements through rigorous, practical testing conducted alongside the German military medical service.

Germany-Ukraine Drone Cooperation

Germany and Ukraine are deepening their cooperation regarding drone technology. A recently signed agreement outlines that the German defense industry will provide Ukrainian armed forces with advanced unmanned systems, alongside technical expertise in production and maintenance.

This partnership encompasses reconnaissance and strike drones, as well as collaborative development projects intended to bolster Ukrainian defense capabilities against ongoing Russian aggression.
