Capital Police Arrest 49-Year-Old Car Thief Hunting Vehicles in Warsaw Parking Lots

Capital police officers in Warsaw arrested a 49-year-old resident of Wołomin red-handed as he scouted parking lots for vehicles to steal using high-tech electronic devices.

Arrested Red-Handed in Warsaw

He drove through Warsaw districts looking for cars to steal. A 49-year-old resident of Wołomin was caught during one such operation. He was arrested red-handed by officers from the Capital Police Headquarters’ Automobile Crime Department and the Warsaw II Police District Headquarters. The man was charged with attempted vehicle burglary and theft, and two counts of burglary and theft. By court decision, he was temporarily detained for three months.

Officers from the Automobile Crime Department of the Warsaw Police Headquarters, as well as the Warsaw II Police District Headquarters, had been working on a case regarding car burglaries and thefts that had been occurring in Warsaw for some time. During their operations, they analyzed burglary and theft cases that mainly involved Japanese brand cars.

Investigation and Surveillance Analysis

Through a series of performed activities and the analysis of surveillance camera recordings, the police determined that a 49-year-old resident of Wołomin driving a VW Passat could be connected to the crimes.

The police organized operations aimed at detaining the suspect, who at that time was moving between several districts and attempting to steal cars. The man drove a work vehicle from parking lot to parking lot looking for a car to steal. Unfortunately, the anti-theft security systems installed in the vehicles did not allow him to start any of them. Despite this, officers arrested the 49-year-old on charges of attempting to burgle and steal a Kia Niro from a parking lot in Żoliborz.

Electronic Equipment Seized During Search

During a search of the VW Passat he was driving, officers found and secured an electronic device used for stealing vehicles, known as a “gameboy,” and a device used to jam GPS signals, known as a “freezer.”

At the prosecutor’s office, the 49-year-old was charged with attempted burglary and theft.

Additional Charges and Court Decision

Further procedural steps conducted by capital police officers from the Automobile Crime Department and officers from the Warsaw II Police District Headquarters allowed them to present the detained 49-year-old with additional charges. This time, the charges involved the burglary and theft of two cars that took place in May and June of this year. Back then, the man stole a Hyundai Kona from a parking lot in Wilanów (the car was recovered after the theft) and a Hyundai Tucson from Hoża Street. The moment of the theft in both cases was captured by surveillance cameras.

The 49-year-old faced two counts of vehicle burglary and theft. The court, which reviewed the motion from the Warsaw Mokotów District Prosecutor’s Office to apply temporary arrest against the suspect, issued a decision for a three-month detention.
