Car Crashes Through Barriers and Bursts Into Flames on S17 Expressway

Following a collision at the S17 expressway terminus near the Warsaw East junction on July 13, a vehicle caught fire, leaving one person hospitalized while two others fled the scene on foot.

Crash and Fire at S17 Terminal

On July 13, shortly after 4:20 PM, emergency services were alerted to a serious accident at the end of the S17 route in Sulejówek, near the East junction. A passenger car struck and breached concrete barriers before coming to a rest on an embankment, where it subsequently ignited.

Fire crews from both Warsaw and the Mińsk district were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle engulfed in flames; three individuals had already exited the car, and the vehicle was eventually destroyed by the blaze.

Ongoing Investigation and Fugitives

While one injured individual remained to receive medical attention and transport to a hospital, two other occupants fled the scene on foot. Police are now working to identify these individuals and investigate the circumstances behind their departure.

Unofficial reports suggest that the vehicle’s occupants may have been under the influence of alcohol or other substances, though these claims remain subject to formal verification by law enforcement.

A Persistent Danger Zone

The terminus of the S17 and the concrete barriers at the Warsaw East junction have become a site of recurring high-risk accidents. Similar incidents occurred throughout 2024 and 2025, involving multiple vehicles including an Audi, a Volvo, and an Iveco delivery van.

Notably, a police pursuit on April 4, 2026, also ended at these barriers, resulting in five injuries and a medical helicopter evacuation. These frequent collisions highlight the hazardous nature of this specific road segment and its concrete fortifications.
