Rising Tensions Between Allies
“Both those who have supported our neighbor since the beginning of the war and believe it is the right path, as well as those who claim aid is unnecessary and all Ukrainians should return home, are acting in this matter,” the head of the Ministry of National Defense wrote on X.
“What is certain is that everything is heading in a very bad direction. The escalation of tensions among allies only serves the enemy,” he added.
The Dispute Over State Honors
Karol Nawrocki returned his Order of the White Eagle after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy named a Ukrainian Special Operations unit “Heroes of the UPA.” Nawrocki emphasized that his decision was not directed against the Ukrainian people and did not signal a change in Polish security policy or support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia.
Following Nawrocki’s move, prominent Ukrainian officials, including the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, his deputy Ihor Zhovkva, Ambassador Vasyl Bodnar, Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha, and former presidents Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yushchenko, began returning their Polish decorations.
The Stance of the Ukrainian President
On Saturday, June 20, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed he had returned the Order of the White Eagle. He stated that the decoration represents the trust and gratitude of the Polish nation, which requires respect for the values foundational to that community.
“If we recognize that this special symbol can remain with Catherine the Great, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schröder, then we in Ukraine will not contradict that,” he wrote, while assuring that Ukraine remains grateful for the support provided by the Polish people.
Concerns Regarding Diplomatic Fallout
Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk criticized the mass return of decorations. He argued that returning state medals is a mistake and that such crises are often exploited by Moscow and radical forces in Europe.
“I am against Ukrainians renouncing the medals that Poland, as a state, awarded them for their services. We cannot fix one harmful and erroneous decision by the current President of Poland with other bad decisions,” Yatsenyuk stated via social media.
