Czarzasty: Ignore Emotions, Secure Ukraine Reconstruction Deals or Lose to the West

Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzasty urged Poland to prioritize economic pragmatism over diplomatic friction with Ukraine, warning that Western powers will seize reconstruction contracts if Poland fails to act.

The Economic Cost of Diplomatic Hostility

Włodzimierz Czarzasty warned that Poland risks losing vital reconstruction contracts in Ukraine if the current political climate leads to further tensions or border closures. He emphasized that these projects represent essential opportunities for Polish companies and workers.

The Deputy Speaker cautioned against reacting with anger, urging officials to think rationally. He noted that if Poland chooses to disengage, Germany, France, and Britain are ready to step in and finalize the necessary agreements.

Pragmatism Over Political Strains

Despite current bilateral tensions, Czarzasty expressed satisfaction with the recent Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk. He welcomed the visit of Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, describing her as a pragmatic professional focused on business.

Czarzasty advocated for a “cold shower” approach to the recent diplomatic cooling between Warsaw and Kyiv. He encouraged policymakers to focus on the interests of Polish citizens rather than emotional rhetoric or public spats.

A Conference Amidst Regional Friction

The two-day URC 2026 conference in Gdańsk brought together thousands of delegates and senior officials. Organizers reported the signing of nearly 200 agreements, deals, and letters of intent despite the prevailing political climate.

The event took place against the backdrop of a deepening dispute following Ukraine’s decision to name a military unit after UPA figures. This move prompted sharp criticism from Polish leadership, including Donald Tusk, and led to a symbolic diplomatic falling out regarding the Order of the White Eagle.
