Damaged Hydrochloric Acid Container Sparks Major Firefighter Response in Białołęka

On Monday, August 10, a damaged chemical container leaked approximately 100 liters of hydrochloric acid at a company on Daniszewska Street in Warsaw’s Białołęka district, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Chemical Leak During Truck Operations

On Monday, August 10, at a company located on Daniszewska Street in Warsaw’s Białołęka district, a dangerous chemical incident occurred involving a damaged DPPL container holding hydrochloric acid.

The incident took place during truck loading or unloading operations when the upper part of the chemical transport container was damaged, causing about 100 liters of hydrochloric acid to leak outside.

High-Risk Corrosive Hazard

Due to the nature of the transported substance, special precautions were necessary because hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive, and contact with it can cause severe skin burns and eye damage, while its vapors are also dangerous.

Consequently, operations during this type of incident require proper protection for rescuers and the restriction of access for unauthorized persons.

Firefighter Intervention and Pumping Operations

Upon arrival, firefighters secured the area around the damaged tank and began operations to prevent further leakage, with one of the primary tasks being the safe pumping of the remaining acid into a new, sealed container located near the loading ramp.

A total of eight fire brigades participated in the operation, including a specialized chemical and ecological unit from Warsaw JRG 6, whose firefighters are prepared to handle accidents and incidents involving hazardous chemical substances.

The operation required extreme caution due to the properties of the acid and the necessity to transfer the substance without causing another rupture, though fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, and firefighters successfully brought the situation under control and secured the dangerous substance.
