At least eight people were killed and 15 injured in a tragic shooting at a renowned school in Thailand on Friday after a 15-year-old student opened fire.

The Incident at Debsirin Nonthaburi School

The incident took place on Friday, August 7, at the renowned Debsirin Nonthaburi School in the Bang Kruai district on the northwestern outskirts of the Thai capital. BBC journalists spoke with a student who managed to escape the building, reporting that she was in her classroom when she saw the shooter move from room to room before shooting a teacher.

Grandparents Killed and Firearm Details

Thai police spokesman Trairong Phiwphan confirmed that the 15-year-old student shot a teacher and then took his own life, with his motives remaining unknown. The BBC reported that the boy allegedly killed his grandparents at a home on the outskirts of Bangkok before heading to the school. Police stated that the 9mm pistol used by the 15-year-old belonged to his grandfather, who was a teacher.

Casualties and Student Accounts

Authorities reported that at least 15 people were injured, two of them critically, and eight people are dead, including the shooter’s grandparents and the perpetrator himself. An 18-year-old student recounted hearing numerous loud sounds he initially mistook for firecrackers or metal being struck before realizing they were gunshots. Police quickly evacuated students and staff, surrounded the building, and ensured the wounded received medical attention at the hospital.

Firearm regulations in Thailand are relatively strict, carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison for illegal possession, yet the country maintains one of the highest rates of civilian gun ownership in Southeast Asia. In recent years, the country has witnessed several tragic gun incidents, including a shooting in February in the southern Hat Yai district that killed a teacher and wounded a student. The renowned school in Nonthaburi where Friday’s shooting occurred has over 3,000 students and employed 147 teachers the previous year.
