Drunk Driver on A1 Arrested After Prosecutor General Intervention

Following intervention by Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek, a 36-year-old drunk driver who collided with a truck on the A1 motorway has been placed in temporary custody for three months.

Collision on the A1 Motorway

The incident occurred on Saturday, July 18, in the Silesian Voivodeship. 36-year-old Krzysztof K. was weaving across the A1 motorway and caused a collision with a truck. Police detected 2.7 permille of alcohol in the man’s breath. It also turned out that he violated court driving bans and failed to comply with the district governor’s decision to revoke his driving privileges.

The man was taken to the police station in Woźniki. However, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lubliniec did not file a motion for temporary arrest at that time.

Prosecutor General Intervention

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek intervened in the case. He announced on social media that he had instructed National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk to take immediate action regarding the decision concerning the intoxicated driver.

If someone drives under the influence, breaks two court driving bans, and gets behind the wheel despite revoked qualifications, the state must react decisively, Żurek noted, adding that there is no room for leniency toward individuals who consciously create a mortal danger on the roads. Guidelines regarding road pirates are to be strictly and consistently enforced, he stated.

Disciplinary Actions and Reassignment

As a result, the deputy district prosecutor in Lubliniec was recalled for a lack of supervision over the activities of prosecutors on duty during the incident. The District Prosecutor’s Office in Częstochowa ordered the initiation of disciplinary proceedings against the prosecutor who was on duty at the time.

Charges and Confession

On the orders of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Częstochowa, which took over the investigation, the 36-year-old was detained on Thursday. He was charged with, among other things, causing an immediate danger of a disaster in land traffic, driving a mechanical vehicle while intoxicated, and violating court driving bans.

Krzysztof K. confessed to the crimes he was charged with. According to his explanations, he went to Rybnik on the day of the incident to pick up a car purchased by a friend, and he admitted to consuming significant amounts of alcohol on the same day.

Temporary Arrest Order

The District Court in Częstochowa granted the prosecutor’s request and applied temporary arrest to Krzysztof K. for a period of three months, announced the spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Częstochowa, Prosecutor Tomasz Ozimek.

The prosecutor from Częstochowa motivated the request for arrest with the severe penalty threatening the suspect (12 years), the justified risk of escape or hiding, and the fear of tampering with evidence.
