End of the Line for Water Meter Readers in Zielona Góra

Zielona Góra’s water utility is transitioning to remote radio-read meters, ending manual home inspections for 18,000 households in an 8.5 million PLN technological upgrade designed to improve efficiency and monitoring.

The Technological Shift

The era of manual water meter readings is coming to an end in Zielona Góra. The local water and sewage utility has signed a contract with T-Mobile to install 18,000 radio-equipped overlays on existing meters, covering the vast majority of the city’s nearly 20,000 connection points.

This investment is expected to significantly modernize water billing. Precise, automated measurements will allow for better consumption control, more effective leak detection, and streamlined data management, which will directly influence future water invoices.

Smart Leak Detection

The new devices will analyze water flow in real-time. By utilizing smart algorithms, the system will identify irregular consumption patterns and potential technical failures, allowing the utility to respond faster and reduce resource waste.

Implementation and Labor

The installation process is expected to be quick and non-invasive, with the hardware designed to last for a decade. Funding was secured through the Smart City concept via the FEniKS program. The utility confirms that current meter readers will be retrained rather than dismissed, transitioning into new roles within the company.
