European Parliament Penalizes Grzegorz Braun Again for Offensive Remarks

The European Parliament has sanctioned Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun for his derogatory comments toward EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas during a security committee meeting held on March 18.

A History of Parliamentary Misconduct

This is the latest in a series of disciplinary actions against the non-attached MEP. Braun has previously faced penalties for disparaging comments regarding the LGBTQI community and for disrupting a moment of silence dedicated to Holocaust victims.

Verbal Attack on Kaja Kallas

The current sanction stems from a March 18 meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE), attended by Kaja Kallas. Braun dismissed her position as unnecessary, labeled Israel and the Jewish diaspora as aggressors in the Middle East conflict, and told Kallas she was merely a “silencer on the end of the barrel.”

Direct Confrontation with the Chair

SEDE chair David McAllister immediately condemned the remarks as antisemitic and demanded they not be repeated. When Braun challenged the chair to elaborate, McAllister ordered him to “shut up.”

Formal Sanctions and Loss of Privileges

Parliament President Roberta Metsola cited a “recurring lack of respect” for standards of conduct in her decision. Braun is barred from SEDE activities for 20 days starting June 16 and has been docked two days of his 350-euro daily allowance.
