Around 7:00 PM on Mokotowska Street in Śródmieście, falling cornice fragments from a building’s fifth floor crashed onto a sidewalk near a restaurant patio, miraculously injuring no one.

Cornice Plummets Near Restaurant Patio

Around 7:00 PM on Mokotowska Street in Śródmieście, a dangerous incident occurred when fragments of a cornice detached from the facade of a tenement house from a height of approximately the fifth floor.

The facade elements crashed onto the sidewalk located directly in front of a restaurant patio. At the time of the incident, pedestrians and patrons of nearby venues could have been present in this part of the street, though fortunately, the falling building fragments did not strike anyone.

Firefighters Secure the Dangerous Area

Two fire brigades were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters immediately secured the area in front of the tenement house and cordoned off the threatened section of the sidewalk with tape, preventing pedestrians from walking directly under the damaged facade.

After conducting an inspection, firefighters noticed additional loose elements still hanging over the sidewalk, posing a risk of further cornice fragments sliding down. Using a ladder, they proceeded to carry out their controlled removal.

Operations and Structural Assessment

The operations were carried out with extreme caution due to the height of the building and the tenement’s location on a busy street near restaurants and service establishments. Until the immediate danger was removed, part of the sidewalk remained closed to traffic.

No one was injured as a result of the incident. It may be necessary to inspect the technical condition of the remaining part of the facade to rule out the risk of further fragments falling off.
