Circumstances of the Tragedy
The accident occurred at 6:39 p.m., according to PGG spokesperson Ewa Grudniok. The worker was engaged in drilling blasting holes when he was struck and crushed by a large stone block.
Despite immediate emergency intervention, a doctor pronounced the miner dead at 7:19 p.m. Company officials expressed their deepest condolences to the grieving family.
Investigation and Safety Protocols
The exact causes and circumstances of the fatal incident are currently under investigation. The case is being handled by a commission from the District Mining Office in Katowice, working in conjunction with the local prosecutor’s office.
Increasing Toll in Polish Mining
Monday’s incident marks the third fatal accident in a Polish hard coal mine this year and the fifth across the entire national mining sector, which includes two deaths in open-pit facilities.
Reflecting on the broader industry context, there were 16 total fatalities in the Polish mining sector during 2025, with 12 of those occurring specifically within hard coal mines.
