Paternity Leave 2026
Paternity leave is a specific entitlement for working fathers, granting 14 calendar days of leave at 100 percent of the base salary. This right exists independently of the mother’s leave status and can be taken in one block or two seven-day segments.
Crucially, this entitlement expires once the child turns one year old. If not utilized within this timeframe, the right is forfeited and cannot be exchanged for any monetary equivalent.
Parental Leave and the Work-Life Balance Directive
More men are now utilizing parental leave following adjustments made to align with the European work-life balance directive. This system allows for flexible care arrangements, enabling fathers to take over the primary care of an infant while the mother returns to work earlier.
The 800 Plus Child Benefit
The 800 Plus program provides 800 PLN monthly per child until they reach the age of 18, totaling 9,600 PLN annually. This benefit is not income-dependent, and fathers have an equal right to apply for it independently through the ZUS electronic system.
In cases of divorce or shared custody, the benefit can be split equally between parents, or awarded entirely to the parent with whom the child resides permanently.
The Active Parent Program
The Active Parent program offers three distinct benefits based on professional activity and the chosen method of childcare. These benefits can provide significant annual savings for families paying for nurseries or nannies.
Tax Relief and Child Deductions
The family tax relief is a frequently overlooked benefit calculated in annual tax returns. The deduction amount scales with the number of children, and parents may decide how to split the relief between them, typically favoring the parent in a higher tax bracket.
Care Allowance During Illness
Fathers are equally eligible for care allowance paid by ZUS when a child falls ill. For children under 14, there is a shared limit of 60 days per year for both parents, which extends to 30 days for children with disabilities aged 14 to 18.
Large Family Card Benefits
Families raising at least three children are eligible for the Large Family Card, which provides discounts on transportation, cultural events, and retail purchases. Both parents receive the card, which is available in traditional or digital formats via the mObywatel application.
Single Father Support and Retirement Provisions
Single fathers are entitled to preferential tax calculations similar to those of married couples. Additionally, under specific conditions where a mother has not attained a minimum pension, a father who has single-handedly raised at least four children may be eligible for the “Mama 4+” parental supplementary benefit.
