Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Postal Service Mail-In Voting Restrictions Nationwide

A U.S. federal judge in Boston has blocked the implementation of President Donald Trump’s postal service regulations aimed at tightening mail-in voting rules ahead of the November congressional elections.

Court Ruling Expands Previous Injunction Nationwide

According to Reuters, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani of Boston blocked the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) from implementing rules stemming from President Donald Trump’s executive order on Tuesday. The regulation aimed to tighten mail-in voting rules ahead of November elections that will decide the balance of power in Congress.

Tuesday’s decision marks another blow to the Trump administration’s efforts to increase federal oversight of the election process. The March executive order required state authorities to share lists of voters eligible for postal voting, with the USPS threatening to withhold delivery of ballots in regions that failed to cooperate. These actions align with the president’s long-standing narrative demanding stricter regulations while repeating false claims that his 2020 election defeat stemmed from mass fraud.

The new ruling drastically expands Judge Talwani’s earlier June decision, which had blocked the decree’s implementation in only 23 states, governed mainly by Democrats. Granting a request from voting rights organizations represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the judge now enforced a nationwide ban on the regulation.

Avoiding Chaos Ahead of the Elections

In her ruling, the Obama-appointed Judge Talwani emphasized that the executive branch lacks the authority to regulate the election process. Under the U.S. Constitution, these powers belong exclusively to individual states.

The regulation currently causes confusion and threatens growing chaos and the erosion of trust in democracy, the judge ruled. She firmly noted that citizens’ right to participate in elections carries significantly greater weight than the executive branch’s unconstitutional attempts to interfere in electoral regulation.

Talwani also rejected arguments from Trump’s team that the case was at too early a stage for a ruling, noting that the USPS had already proposed specific regulations. With less than 90 days remaining until the November 3, 2026 midterms, there is a critical need for an injunction stopping the federal government from changing the rules of the game on the eve of voting, she concluded.

White House and Activist Reactions

Administration representatives made no secret of their opposition to the verdict. White House press secretary Lauren Bis defended the president’s actions, stating that the administration will continue to lawfully implement the program the president was elected to enforce, which includes securing American elections.

Activists view the matter differently. ACLU attorney Sophia Lin Lakin called the verdict a necessary signal to an administration that continues to weaponize the state apparatus to sow chaos in elections.

The Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a 6-3 majority, may have the final say on the matter. The Trump administration previously filed a motion there to suspend Judge Talwani’s June decision, though the highest court has not yet issued a ruling.
