Fentanyl Theft at Rome Hospital Sparks Emergency Government Meeting

Italian authorities have convened an emergency session at Palazzo Chigi following the theft of 80 vials of fentanyl from a locked cabinet at the Israelite Hospital in Rome.

The Missing Narcotic

According to the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero, 80 vials of fentanyl were stolen from a secure cabinet at the Israelite Hospital in Rome. Sources from the Italian Prime Minister’s office estimate that the stolen supply could produce approximately 20,000 doses for illegal consumption.

The hospital manager, who discovered the disappearance, stated that all necessary security protocols were in place. The facility has launched an internal investigation and notified the authorities.

An Inside Job Investigation

The ANSA news agency reports that there were no signs of forced entry at the storage site. Access to the key was restricted to staff members and the night watchman, yet no security cameras were present to capture the incident.

The Rome Public Prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into the theft for the purpose of illicit trade. Officials are exploring the theory that the heist was a coordinated effort intended for the black market.

Emergency Government Response

On Friday, July 3, an extraordinary meeting was held at Palazzo Chigi, chaired by Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano. Attendees included representatives from the Ministry of Health, the General Directorate for Drug Enforcement, and government anti-addiction policy departments.
