Forged Signatures and Stolen Stamps: New Probe at Szpital Południowy

Prosecutors have launched an investigation into the unauthorized use of a morgue coordinator’s seal to forge death certificates at Warsaw’s Szpital Południowy while the official was on vacation.

Unauthorized Documentation and Forgery

The investigation covers the period between August 22 and September 9, 2025. It centers on the falsification of 20 death certificates, where an unauthorized person applied the morgue coordinator’s stamp and forged his signature.

The case was triggered by a report from the morgue coordinator himself, who discovered the abuse after receiving a call from the Civil Registry Office regarding a missing death certificate that he had been unable to process during his holiday.

Distinction from Ongoing SOR Investigations

Prosecutor Piotr Antoni Skiba confirmed that the hospital is currently under intense scrutiny, with 32 separate proceedings initiated between January 1, 2023, and June 24, 2026. This specific case is being treated as distinct from two other recent investigations into irregularities at the hospital’s Emergency Department (SOR), which involve allegations of fraud and abuse of public office.

Systemic Scrutiny and Professional Fallout

Multiple oversight bodies, including the Medical Council, the National Health Fund (NFZ), and the National Labour Inspectorate (PIP), are conducting inspections at the facility. The Ministry of Health has also ordered audits following allegations regarding the conduct of former SOR coordinator Dawid Kacprzyk.

The facility is also dealing with the aftermath of claims made by former department head Emil Jędrzejewski, who alleged medical malpractice and procedural failures. While Jędrzejewski remains under investigation for his statements, his successor, Dr. Piotr Szenk, has publicly rejected these claims, stating that the emergency unit functioned correctly during his tenure.
