Four Siblings Die in Tragic Fire in Konitsa

Four siblings have perished in a container fire in the Greek town of Konitsa on Monday, June 15, after living in squalid conditions for three decades following a past earthquake.

Fatal Fire in Konitsa

Greek fire services confirmed an operation involving 10 firefighters in the town of Konitsa, located in the Ioannina regional unit. Authorities discovered four unidentified bodies inside a container following the blaze.

The victims have been identified as three women, aged 85, 83, and 69, and one 76-year-old man. The siblings had resided in the container for 30 years after an earthquake destroyed their original home.

Living in Extreme Poverty

Neighbors reported that the siblings lived in severe hardship without electricity and suffered from various health issues. Officials suggest the fire may have been ignited by a candle or a kerosene lamp.

Despite interventions by social services and the local church, which offered housing repairs and relocation, the siblings refused to leave their living quarters. There were reports that they declined food assistance and were seen scavenging for sustenance.

Official Investigation Underway

Aris Dentopoulos, head of the Konitsa community, noted that the siblings had lived in the area their entire lives without forming their own families. He emphasized the need for urgent state intervention for those living in precarious conditions.

Dentopoulos had notified authorities about the family’s extreme poverty and health struggles on April 1. The public prosecutor has ordered a formal investigation into the matter.
