France has taken a significant step toward legalizing assisted dying after the National Assembly passed a controversial bill allowing terminally ill patients to access lethal substances under strict medical conditions.

A Major Legislative Milestone

French lawmakers have cleared the first hurdle in the legislative process to legalize assisted dying. The lower house of parliament passed the “dying assistance” bill, which now moves to the Senate for further deliberation, with a final vote scheduled for July 15.

The bill was passed by a vote of 295 to 232. Supporters describe the move as a major social transformation and arguably one of the most significant reforms enacted in the last decade.

Arguments and Concerns

While proponents emphasize the necessity of the reform, critics—primarily from the right and far-right—argue that it represents a dangerous shift in national values. Former Prime Minister Francois Bayrou expressed reservations, citing concerns that criteria in other nations often become increasingly flexible over time.

Strict Eligibility and Protocols

The legislation outlines specific criteria for assistance, limited to adults with serious, incurable, and life-threatening conditions who are suffering from unbearable physical or psychological pain. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to express their will freely and clearly.

Following intense debate over 1,800 amendments, the current version mandates that patients self-administer the lethal substance, with medical personnel only intervening if the patient is physically unable to perform the act themselves.
