The Request for Safe-Conduct from Transnistria
Initial information regarding Marcin Romanowski’s departure to Tiraspol was reported on Wednesday, August 12, by RMF FM. Anna Ptaszek, spokesperson for the Regional Court in Warsaw, confirmed in an interview with Gazeta.pl that an application for a safe-conduct letter for the former deputy justice minister arrived at the court’s inbox on August 4, bearing a date of July 12.
The document features his handwritten signature, and both the letter and envelope indicate the shipment was mailed from Tiraspol in the Transnistria region. The sender also requests permission to exercise his parliamentary mandate, judge Ptaszek reported.
Political Reactions and Accusations of Treason
Left-wing MEP Robert Biedroń wrote on X that news indicates Romanowski is currently hiding in Transnistria, asking how low one must sink to hide among Russian soldiers while being protected by PiS, declaring that Russia is already here.
Coalition of Civilians MEP Dariusz Joński stated that Romanowski has hidden with Putin, adding that Braun is probably applauding Kaczyński. KO MEP Kamila Gasiuk-Pihowicz assessed that Ziobro’s associates constitute a fifth column after media reported Romanowski’s presence in pro-Russian Transnistria.
Criticism Over Escape Route
Left-wing MEP Krzysztof Śmiszek criticized Romanowski for hiding in a pro-Putin breakaway province of Moldova, remarking that the nationalist right has always sided with the tsars, and predicting the coward will claim he heroically hid from Tusk’s murderous regime.
KO MEP Elżbieta Łukacijewska emphasized that Romanowski is staying in Tiraspol, a Russian bridgehead in Europe, noting the progression from seeking refuge with Orbán to a location under Putin’s influence as a telling escape route from Polish justice.
Charges and Background
Marcin Romanowski served as deputy justice minister in the Law and Justice (PiS) government. Prosecutors intend to present him with 11 charges concerning irregularities in the disbursement of funds from the Justice Fund, including participation in an organized criminal group led by former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro and official misconduct.
