Garbage Truck Strikes 90-Year-Old in Warsaw; Amputation Likely

A 90-year-old man remains in critical condition after being struck and run over by a garbage truck on Przasnycka Street in Warsaw’s Żoliborz district on Tuesday afternoon, June 30.

The Incident on Przasnycka Street

The accident occurred around 5:00 PM within a residential zone at 16B Przasnycka Street. Initial reports indicate the elderly man, who used a cane, was walking around a parked garbage truck when the driver suddenly pulled forward, hitting and knocking the man down before driving over his legs.

Emergency Response and Medical Condition

Emergency medical services and police were dispatched to the scene. The victim received immediate aid before being transported to a hospital in critical condition. The driver of the garbage truck was tested and found to be sober.

Family Account of the Tragedy

According to the victim’s family, the man usually used a walker but attempted to walk around the vehicle using a cane while his granddaughter went back to retrieve his walker. He was positioned near the driver’s side cab when the truck began to move.

Investigation into the Collision

Although the driver reportedly had an additional mirror, he failed to see the pedestrian in front of the vehicle. The truck crushed the victim’s calves and feet, leading to critical injuries and a high probability of double leg amputation above the knees. Police are currently investigating the circumstances, including whether the truck’s forward-facing camera captured the incident.
