Gdańsk: Four Children Rescued After Being Swept Out to Sea on a SUP Board

On Saturday, July 25, the Gdańsk municipal guard rescued four children drifting on a SUP board without life jackets who were swept about 400 meters offshore toward the port fairway.

Dangerous Situation on the Bay of Gdańsk

On Saturday, July 25, a water patrol of the Gdańsk municipal guard spotted an object drifting toward the entrance of the Port of Gdańsk. Upon closer inspection with binoculars, officers discovered that four children were on a single SUP board.

According to the municipal guard statement, a strong south-westerly wind blew the board approximately 400 meters from the shore. The children were drifting toward the port approach channel used by large vessels, making the situation exceptionally dangerous. An additional hazard was the complete lack of safety equipment, as none of the children wore life jackets.

Rescue and Return to Shore

The patrol immediately rushed to help, safely taking all four children aboard the boat, securing the SUP board and equipment, and locating their guardians. The children were transported to the beach in Brzeźno, nearly a kilometer from where they were found, and handed over to the care of an adult relative.

The municipal guard reported that the guardian was reprimanded regarding the necessity of constant supervision of children and the use of appropriate safety measures while using bodies of water. Authorities emphasize that conditions on the water can quickly push SUP board users and other water equipment far from shore, reminding the public that life jackets should be standard equipment and children must always remain under adult supervision.
