German Doctor Sentenced to Life for Murdering 15 Patients

A 41-year-old doctor in Germany has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of fifteen patients, following a trial that revealed a pattern of lethal home visits and subsequent arson.

The Court’s Verdict and Sentencing

The court emphasized the gravity of the perpetrator’s guilt, ordering him to be placed in a secure psychiatric facility after completing his prison term. Furthermore, the 41-year-old has been issued a lifetime ban from practicing medicine.

Details of the Victims

The doctor’s victims included twelve women and three men, ranging in age from 25 to 94. While the court acknowledged that all victims were in critical condition, it clarified that none of them were actively dying at the time of the murders.

Confession and Motive

After months of silence, the accused unexpectedly confessed in late June to killing twelve terminally ill patients during home visits. He claimed to have convinced himself he was acting righteously by sparing them from suffering and infirmity, ultimately apologizing to the victims’ families at the end of the trial.

Arson and Ongoing Investigations

The suspect has been in custody since August 2024. The investigation originally began as a case of fatal arson, as the doctor allegedly set fires to cover up the murders. A special homicide unit from the Berlin Criminal Office analyzed hundreds of patient files before the prosecution filed charges in April 2025.

Scope of the Criminal Probe

Authorities are currently investigating an additional 76 cases, with another indictment expected later this year. German news agency DPA has noted that this case could potentially become one of the largest of its kind in German history.
