Groundbreaking ID Card Reforms Set for December 1, 2026

The Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration is preparing a sweeping regulatory reform allowing citizens to collect ID cards at any municipal office nationwide starting December 1, 2026.

New ID Card Collection Procedure

The Ministry of Interior and Administration has introduced changes to a draft amendment regulating personal identity cards. The most significant element of the upcoming reform relates to the document issuance procedure. Under previous practices, collecting a document required visiting the exact municipal office where the application was submitted.

Now, citizens will be able to clearly designate any municipal office across the entire country during the application process to conveniently collect their new document. Crucially, the office where the application was filed will formally remain the issuing authority. These adjustments respond to contemporary social needs and the high mobility of Poles.

Quick Correction of Official Errors

A novelty in Polish administrative law is the mechanism for rapidly rectifying administrative mistakes. If the regulations enter into force and a document is invalidated in the system due to a clerical error, the citizen will not have to go through the full procedure again.

The new regulations introduce a technical procedure for restoring the validity of a document.

Additional Modifications Across Registries

In addition to changes regarding identity cards, the amendment regulates a series of related areas concerning the functioning of state records and passport registers.
