Hazardous Chemical Reaction at Reda Aquapark Forces Evacuation of Over 400 People

More than 400 guests and staff were evacuated from the Aquapark Reda on Sunday evening after a technical error triggered a dangerous chlorine gas leak.

Emergency Services Respond to Chemical Hazard

Senior Captain Andrzej Piechowski from the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Gdańsk reported that before 7:00 PM on Sunday, the fire service in Wejherowo received a report regarding a chemical substance being released at the indoor pool of Aquapark Reda on Morska Street.

Technical Error Triggers Chlorine Gas Reaction

According to preliminary findings, the incident likely resulted from a technical staff error. A technician unknowingly added sulfuric acid to a sodium hypochlorite tank used for pool water treatment, and the resulting chemical reaction caused chlorine to be emitted, stated Senior Captain Andrzej Piechowski in the evening.

Shifting Reports on the Cause of the Leak

In its initial post-evacuation statement, the fire service reported that the sodium hypochlorite leak resulted from a compromised system installation. Later, in a subsequent announcement, rescuers stated that a technical operation error was the probable cause.

Hospitalization and Mass Evacuation

The fire service stated that a total of over 400 people were evacuated from the facility, including aquapark guests and employees. The technician operating the pool water treatment system suffered poisoning and was transported to the hospital.

Specialized Chemical Rescue Teams Deployed

Eleven units from the State Fire Service and Volunteer Fire Service are working at the scene, including the Specialized Chemical and Ecological Rescue Group from Gdynia. In total, over 30 rescuers are engaged in the operations.

Aquapark Issues Official Statement

The management of the aquapark confirmed the incident by publishing a statement on social media indicating that a “technical incident” occurred around 7:00 PM. The statement read that no guests or staff were harmed, emphasizing that guest safety and health are the highest priority, and announced that updates on reopening plans will be shared via their website and social media.
