Heatwave from the West to Break Temperature Records

A sweltering air mass is moving into Poland, bringing extreme temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius and tropical nights, while experts warn that urban infrastructure is ill-equipped for the heat.

Weather Forecast and Temperature Peaks

Friday will be sunny across the country, with temperatures ranging from 27 degrees Celsius in Podhale to 34 degrees locally in the west. A further surge on Saturday will see temperatures reach 38 degrees Celsius in western regions, with only the Baltic coast remaining cooler.

Poland is now entering the most intense phase of a European heatwave, with the peak expected throughout the weekend and early next week. Current forecasts suggest that the temperatures in the southwest could set new historical records.

Urban Vulnerability and Heat Stress

Experts from the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences warn that Polish cities are unprepared for such extreme heat. The combination of concrete, asphalt, and limited green space creates a “heat island” effect that traps warmth and hinders air circulation.

Citizens are urged to monitor the “feels-like” temperature, which may exceed 40 degrees Celsius over the weekend. Because buildings are not designed for thermal insulation against such extremes, the heat buildup inside residential areas is a growing concern.

Tropical Nights and Health Recommendations

The accumulation of heat during “tropical nights”—where temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius—prevents the body from recovering, leading to dangerous levels of heat stress. Continuous exposure to high temperatures is considered a significant health risk.

Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with respiratory or heart conditions, must ensure proper hydration with electrolytes and water. To maintain a stable thermal balance in homes, experts advise against opening windows during the peak heat hours starting Friday.
