Broadcasting Halted After Apology
According to the portal telex.hu, state media signals were suspended at 4:00 PM on Tuesday. The broadcast featured a message stating that public media should not lie and apologized for previous conduct.
The screen message noted that services are temporarily suspended as the media organization undergoes a transformation to ensure future reliability and independence. Viewers were urged to remain patient during this transition.
Political Context and Promises
Peter Magyar and other Tisza party politicians had repeatedly pledged during their election campaign to dismantle state-funded party propaganda within the public broadcaster MTVA. The M1 channel had served as the flagship propaganda outlet for the Fidesz administration.
Magyar described the development as a historic day, emphasizing that the era of state-sponsored disinformation on all channels had finally concluded. He criticized the previous administration for constant dishonesty.
Administrative Personnel Changes
Prior to the shutdown, interim MTVA head András P. Horváth, appointed only a week earlier, dismissed M1 channel director Zsolt Nemeth. Reports indicate that deputy content director Zsolt Mezei was also removed from his position.
Commitment to Accountability
Before assuming his role, Magyar promised to hold the previous Fidesz leadership accountable for their governance. During the parliamentary session on May 9, he asserted that the Fidesz elite must face the consequences of their actions.
