Israeli Army Clashes With Settlers in West Bank Amid Family Drama

Israeli forces clashed with Jewish settlers who built an illegal outpost in the West Bank village of Kusra, trapping two Palestinian families without electricity or water.

Illegal Outpost in Kusra

A group of over a dozen Jewish settlers has been besieging Palestinian homes in Kusra since Sunday. According to the BBC, the settlers established an illegal outpost, blocked the road to two Palestinian families’ homes, and cut off their electricity and water supply. Palestinian villagers called Israeli services for help. The Times of Israel reported that the first soldiers to arrive did not remove the settlers, but instead began praying with them.

On Wednesday, clashes erupted between the Israeli military and border police and a crowd of settlers. Israeli security forces used stun grenades and tear gas, but the settlers were ultimately not removed. According to Reuters, this is a rare case of direct confrontation between the military and settlers. The Israeli military announced on Thursday that it was deploying additional soldiers to the village to conduct defensive missions and patrols in the area, and to ensure security and protect the region.

Condemnation and Land Seizure

Recently, there has been a sharp increase in land seizures by settlers and attacks against Palestinians. The military typically does not respond to this violence, and the stance of Israel’s right-wing government emboldens radical settlers to take further action. On Tuesday, the Israeli military issued a statement condemning the illegal, reprehensible, and unacceptable actions of the settlers. Reuters noted this was one of the army’s harshest statements on the matter.

Qusay Abu Reeda, trapped with his relatives in one of the homes, told the agency that they are appealing to government institutions and every free and honorable person for help in securing food and medicine.

West Bank Context and Statistics

The West Bank has been occupied by Israel since 1967, during which time hundreds of settlements have been built. All of them are illegal under international law. Outposts organized by radical settlers, such as the one in Kusra, are also built in violation of Israeli law. The West Bank is currently inhabited by approximately 3.4 million Palestinians and over 500,000 settlers.

In the first half of 2026, 660 extremist settler attacks were recorded in the West Bank, a 63 percent increase compared to the same period last year, public broadcaster Kan reported this week, citing security sources.

UN Warnings and Media Assessment

Ramiz Alakbarow, the UN’s special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, stated during a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday that settler violence has reached an unprecedented level. The events in Kusra were condemned by figures including US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who called them a horrifying act of terror aimed at intimidating and harassing Palestinian families.

Haaretz assessed that the West Bank is a powder keg that could explode at any moment. According to the newspaper, senior officers are afraid to take decisive action against extremist settlers out of fear of political consequences. The opposition-leaning daily added that the events in Kusra are merely the tip of the iceberg of growing settler violence and the inaction of Israeli services.
