Kraków Bans Barbecue Zones at Zakrzówek Over Animal Cruelty and Vandalism

Kraków municipal authorities have permanently closed the designated barbecue area at Zakrzówek Park following repeated acts of vandalism, infrastructure damage, and an incident involving the illegal killing of a protected snake.

Infrastructure and Waste Removal

The city has removed all signage, ash bins, and waste receptacles from the park’s designated grilling zone. Municipal officials stated that the decision was driven by persistent vandalism and the environmental degradation of the area.

Cruelty Toward Protected Species

The decision was finalized after a resident reported that participants at an outdoor party had deliberately killed and cooked a smooth snake, a species strictly protected by Polish law. The presence of this snake was a key factor in preventing previous real estate development on the site.

Environmental and Social Impact

Aleksandra Mikolaszek from the Kraków Board of Urban Greenery confirmed that the move addresses the destruction of natural habitats, littering, and the loss of local wildlife. City authorities emphasized that the protection of nature and public order necessitated the closure.

Broader Closures in City Parks

Kraków has also eliminated barbecue zones in Krowoderski Park and Bagry Wielkie Park. Officials noted that these closures are the result of ongoing public nuisance complaints and the recurring need to preserve recreational spaces for all residents.
