Krakow Police Investigate Theft at Bohdan Lepky’s Grave

Krakow police are investigating the theft of a relief sculpture from the tomb of prominent Ukrainian writer Bohdan Lepky at the historic Rakowicki Cemetery, reported by Ukrainian foreign ministry officials.

Vandalism at Rakowicki Cemetery

On the night between Saturday and Sunday, July 5, an act of vandalism occurred at the burial site of Bohdan Lepky, a distinguished Ukrainian writer, scholar, and professor. A relief sculpture depicting the author was stolen from the headstone, according to Heorhij Tychyj, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kyiv.

Bohdan Lepky (1872–1941) was a noted Ukrainian poet, prose writer, and professor at the Jagiellonian University.

Official Investigation and Context

Lesser Poland police confirmed receiving a report regarding the theft of the plaque from the tomb. Officers are currently conducting a forensic examination at the scene.

Investigators cautioned against drawing premature conclusions regarding the perpetrator’s motives, noting that monuments at the Rakowicki Cemetery—Krakow’s oldest necropolis—frequently become targets for thieves.

Significance of the Necropolis

Established in 1803, the Rakowicki Cemetery is the most famous historical necropolis in Krakow. It serves as the final resting place for cultural figures, scientists, prominent family members, political and social activists, and participants of both world wars.
