Tensions Rise Over Belarus Involvement
In mid-May, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia was attempting to further involve Belarus in the ongoing war. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi subsequently confirmed that the threat of a Russian offensive launched from Belarusian territory remains entirely realistic.
Zelensky recently stated that Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko must take concrete steps toward de-escalation. Reporting that Ukraine had used intelligence channels to demand action, Zelensky gave Lukashenko one week to dismantle Russian drone relay stations operating within Belarus, threatening that Ukraine would otherwise take direct measures to destroy them.
Kremlin Pledges Security for Minsk
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov addressed these statements during a meeting with ambassadors, claiming Ukraine’s goal is to drag Belarus directly into the conflict. He emphasized that the Russian-Belarusian treaty, effective since 2025, mandates mutual defense.
Lavrov declared that Russia is fully prepared to employ every available mechanism provided by their bilateral treaty to guarantee the security of its ally should the need arise.
Ukrainian Military Assessment of Potential Threats
Major General Oleksandr Pivnenko, commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, stated that for Russia to open a new front from Belarus, they would need to assemble a force of 70,000 soldiers. He expressed doubt regarding the enemy’s ability to mobilize such a contingent.
Pivnenko also dismissed the possibility of a Russian strike originating from the breakaway region of Transnistria. He warned that Belarus and Transnistria should avoid joining the conflict, asserting that Ukraine possesses the capabilities to dismantle such plans quickly.
