Lightning Strike in Szklarska Poręba Leaves Woman in Cardiac Arrest

A 38-year-old woman was struck by lightning in Jakuszyce on Saturday afternoon, suffering sudden cardiac arrest before being transported to a hospital in the Jelenia Góra valley in stable condition.

The Incident in Jakuszyce

The event occurred on Saturday afternoon in Jakuszyce, the highest district of Szklarska Poręba in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. The victim received immediate assistance from witnesses, followed by the Karkonosze GOPR mountain rescue team and a medical emergency unit from Szklarska Poręba.

The patient suffered sudden cardiac arrest but was later transported to the Provincial Hospital Center of the Jelenia Góra Valley in stable condition for further diagnostics. Authorities extended their thanks to the witnesses and the rescue teams for their life-saving efforts.

Fire Brigade Operations Across Poland

Between Saturday and Sunday morning, the State Fire Service recorded nearly 900 interventions nationwide due to severe storms, with almost half of these incidents occurring in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. Operations included clearing fallen trees, securing damaged roofs, and pumping water from flooded properties.

Outside of Lower Silesia, the highest number of incidents were reported in the Greater Poland (155) and Lubusz (142) regions. From midnight until Sunday morning, the Greater Poland region remained the most affected, accounting for 109 individual emergency calls.

Meteorological and Hydrological Warnings

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued first and second-degree alerts for heat and storms. Second-degree storm warnings are currently in effect for 15 voivodeships, while heat warnings cover the western and central parts of Poland.

Hydrological warnings of the first degree have also been issued for the central belt of the country, from the Pomeranian region to the Lesser Poland region, due to the risk of rapid increases in water levels following the storm activity.

Heatwave and Alert Definitions

Second-degree heat alerts are active for the Greater Poland, Łódź, Świętokrzyskie, Silesian, Opole, and Lubusz voivodeships, as well as parts of several other regions. These warnings remain active until Sunday evening.

Meteorological alerts denote dangerous weather phenomena that may cause significant material damage or pose a threat to health and life. Hydrological alerts indicate that water levels may locally reach or exceed warning thresholds.
