Lightning Strike Sparks Fire at Children’s Home Near Piaseczno

A lightning strike during a midnight thunderstorm set fire to the roof of a children’s home in Pęchery near Piaseczno, forcing 14 occupants to evacuate safely before emergency services arrived.

Midnight Lightning Strike Ignites Roof

In the middle of the night in Pęchery near Piaseczno, a dangerous fire broke out in one of the buildings belonging to the Children’s Home on Bolesława Chrobrego Street. According to witnesses, lightning struck the building during a thunderstorm passing over the area, and a moment later the roof caught fire.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:00 AM, with the report to the fire department received at precisely 1:07 AM. Firefighters stated that initial information indicated the fire broke out as a result of a lightning strike, a version of events also confirmed by witness accounts.

Safe Evacuation of Fourteen Occupants

There were 14 people inside the building at the time, consisting of 12 residents of the facility and two caregivers. All of them managed to leave the facility before rescue services arrived, and fortunately, no one was injured.

Intensive Firefighting and Demolition Work

The fire engulfed the roof and attic of the building. After extinguishing the flames, firefighters also had to dismantle damaged elements of the roof structure, with nine fire brigades participating in the operation.

Preliminary findings by firefighters indicate that the cause of the fire was an atmospheric discharge.
