Major Fire Engulfs Waste Disposal Site in Chorzów

Dozens of fire brigades are battling an ongoing blaze at a large-scale waste facility in Chorzów, prompting local authorities to issue urgent health warnings to residents in the surrounding area.

Scale of the Operation

Captain Michał Adamek of the Chorzów Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service reported that the fire broke out at a sprawling site containing loose, bulky waste. As of early evening, the fire remains uncontained and continues to spread, though there are currently no reports of casualties.

The Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Katowice confirmed the blaze involves a waste pile measuring approximately 100 by 30 meters. Approximately 50 fire units are on-site, including specialized firefighting platoons, breathing apparatus support from Gliwice, and a mobile laboratory from Katowice.

Public Safety Advisories

Chorzów officials have urged residents to keep windows closed and avoid approaching the vicinity of the fire for safety reasons. Similar warnings were issued by the City of Katowice for its residents, advising against outdoor activities until the situation is brought under control.

The Katowice City Hall stated that, according to the District Crisis Management Center, preliminary assessments have not confirmed an immediate threat to the Katowice area, and services continue to monitor the situation closely.
