Marcin Romanowski Not in Serbia: Prosecutor’s Filing Reaches Court

Serbian authorities have officially informed the Polish court that they have no record of Marcin Romanowski’s presence in the country, effectively undermining defense arguments for revoking his international arrest warrant.

Uncertain whereabouts of the former deputy minister

The current location of Marcin Romanowski remains unclear. In late May, he vacated the Budapest apartment where he had been granted political asylum by Viktor Orbán’s government. This asylum status was revoked in early July following political shifts in Hungary. Previous media reports suggested sightings of Romanowski in Serbia and Croatia.

Defense claims versus official records

Romanowski’s defense counsel previously filed a motion to revoke the European Arrest Warrant (EAW), asserting that their client was residing in Serbia—a jurisdiction where the EAW does not apply. However, Belgrade has failed to confirm his presence on its territory.

Prosecutorial correspondence settles the matter

Following discussions between Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek and the Serbian Prosecutor General, official correspondence arrived at the Polish court on Friday (March 3). The Serbian prosecutor stated they have no knowledge of Romanowski’s presence in the country, a revelation expected to lead to the dismissal of the defense’s motion to lift international search operations.

Corruption allegations and legal status

The former deputy minister faces formal charges related to irregularities within the Justice Fund, including participation in an organized criminal group and the manipulation of grant competitions. In early December 2024, the court authorized his arrest, and a European Arrest Warrant was issued on December 19, 2024, shortly after reports surfaced that he had secured protection in Hungary.
