Massive Great White Shark Spotted Off Portuguese Resort Popular With Tourists

A massive four-meter great white shark has been spotted just two nautical miles off the coast of the Portuguese resort of Nazare, prompting immediate safety alerts from local authorities.

Real panic struck one of Europe’s most popular coasts. An enormous predator was spotted just two nautical miles off the shores of the Portuguese resort of Nazare. Video analysis conducted by biologists leaves no doubt that a roughly 4-meter great white shark appeared near beaches full of surfers and tourists. Authorities immediately issued warnings for surrounding swimming areas.

Footage from a Yacht: Predator Came Extremely Close

The dangerous incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. The presence of the massive shark about two nautical miles from the shore of Nazare, famous for its giant waves, was confirmed by Ocean Adventure, a company organizing dolphin-watching tours.

The large predator swam directly up to a tourist yacht, from whose deck the crew and passengers managed to record a short video. The video material was immediately sent to specialists for detailed analysis.

Biologists Confirm: It is a 4-Meter Great White Shark

Marine biology experts analyzed the gathered film material. Their assessment indicates that the filmed animal is most likely an adult great white shark specimen measuring approximately 4 meters in length.

As scientists explain, flawless identification of the species was significantly facilitated by the animal’s characteristic fin color and the dynamic speed with which the shark moved through the water.

Immediate Alerts for Beachgoers and Surfers

In response to confirmed reports of the presence of such a large predator, authorities issued an official safety alert for the beaches in Nazare and nearby Sao Martinho do Porto. These locations are extremely popular among tourists, beachgoers, and surfers from around the world.

The great white shark is an extremely rare species appearing off the shores of Portugal. Previously, mainly other, less dangerous marine reptiles—primarily the blue shark—were spotted in this area of the ocean.

Previous Shark Encounters in Portuguese Waters

Although the presence of a great white shark is a rare event, encounters with sharks have already been recorded in Portuguese waters in past years. In July 2025, the presence of a blue shark was noticed near the popular resort of Peniche in the west of the country, which also resulted in the temporary closure of one of the local beaches.

Last year, the same species was also seen near the coast of the municipalities of Caldas da Rainha and Obidos. However, none of the blue shark specimens encountered at that time exceeded 2.5 meters in length, and in none of the cases did an attack on a human occur.
