Morawiecki Defends Former RARS Chief
In 2020, then-Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appointed Michał K. to lead the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves (RARS). Investigators now suspect Michał K. of participating in an organized criminal group.
When questioned about his relationship with Michał K. by TVP reporter Justyna Dobrosz-Oracz, Morawiecki denied being in contact. He asserted that Michał K. had been unfairly treated by the Polish state, claiming the former official had been denied proper legal procedures to clear his name over the past six months.
Accusations of Insinuation
The exchange grew heated when Dobrosz-Oracz asked about the role of Paweł Sz., the founder of the “Red is Bad” clothing brand, in the Prime Minister’s Office. Paweł Sz. faces charges related to money laundering and participation in an organized criminal group as part of the RARS investigation.
Morawiecki dismissed the questions as “vile insinuations,” stating that the reporter’s premise was entirely untrue. Despite accusations from the journalist that he is avoiding accountability, the former Prime Minister insisted he has nothing to hide.
Ongoing Prosecution and Personnel Changes
Reports from Onet indicate that the prosecutor’s office may bring charges against Morawiecki regarding a lack of proper supervision over RARS. Speculation regarding these charges surfaced in April following a leadership change at the Silesian Department for Organized Crime and Corruption of the National Prosecutor’s Office.
Marek Wełna recently took control of the department and has reportedly taken personal charge of the RARS investigation. Media reports note that Wełna previously requested the removal of prosecutors who had been handling high-profile cases, including Karol Zok, who was tasked with the RARS scandal.
