Nawrocki Submits New Climate Policy Referendum Request to Senate

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has submitted a new Senate request for a September 2026 referendum on EU climate policy after his previous proposal was rejected in May.

New Referendum Request Submitted

Karol Nawrocki has once again submitted a request to the Senate for a referendum concerning the future of EU climate policy. The proposed presidential question asks whether citizens are in favor of Poland implementing the European Union’s climate policy.

According to the official website of the President of the Republic of Poland, the referendum date has been set for Sunday, September 27, 2026.

Previous Proposal Rejected in May

The president’s first request on this matter was rejected in May, at which point the politician announced he would submit another proposal with a modified question.

In the initial referendum request, Nawrocki proposed holding it on September 27 as well, with a question concerning a climate policy that led to rising living costs, energy prices, and business expenses. During the May vote, the motion was rejected with 32 senators voting in favor, 62 against, and one abstention, with upper house representatives criticizing the question as biased.

Senate Deputy Marshal Rejects Proposal

Already last Sunday, July 19, Magdalena Biejat announced that there would be no consent for the referendum proposed by Karol Nawrocki regarding the future of EU climate policy.

Biejat stated that the president’s initiative does not aim to stop climate change, but rather attempts to create an atmosphere leading toward Poland’s exit from the European Union, disguised under the pretext of caring for public welfare.
