Near-Miss on Krakow Tracks: PKP Investigates Signal Failure

Two passenger trains narrowly avoided a collision near the Krakow Zablocie station on Wednesday, July 15, after a regional train driver reportedly failed to stop at a red signal.

The Incident Near Krakow Zablocie

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. involving a Koleje Malopolskie train heading to Krakow Airport and a PKP Intercity train bound for Gdynia Glowna. The trains stopped just a short distance from each other, preventing a potential collision on the same track.

Cause Under Investigation

Piotr Hamarnik from the PKP Polish Railway Lines press team stated that the primary cause appears to be the regional train driver passing a “Stop” signal. A railway commission will conduct a formal investigation into the matter.

No injuries were reported, and railway infrastructure remained undamaged throughout the event.

Previous Incidents on the Network

A similar occurrence took place in late August 2024 near Trzebinia, where two trains were directed onto the same track due to a driver missing a “Stop” signal. Prompt braking prevented a collision in that instance.

Another case was reported in late March at the Gniezno station in Greater Poland. In that incident, a Polregio train failed to stop at a red signal, halting just meters away from a stationary train on the same line.
